ChatGPT Ad Formats: What’s Live and What’s Not (2026)
Which ChatGPT ad formats are live, which are in testing, and which are unconfirmed, plus ad specs, India budget notes and how to start.

ChatGPT ad formats right now: a sponsored text ad under the answer, a product feed ad for stores, and Sponsored Agents, which are still a US test. OpenAI announced a visual ad for image generation on October 5, with US testing planned this month. Everything else you've read about is unconfirmed.
We run an SEO and AEO agency at Relentless Vikas, so we're not neutral. We're also about to test ChatGPT ads ourselves, so there are no results of ours in this post, only what OpenAI has published. Where a detail comes from somewhere else, we say so. Where we found nothing, we say that too. All checks were done on October 16, 2026.
New to the terms? Our post on how GEO differs from SEO covers how paid ads in AI tools sit next to getting cited in AI answers.
Where ChatGPT ads show up
The ad sits under the answer with a Sponsored label, and it's visually split from the reply. Free and Go users see these. Plus, Pro and Business users don't, and neither do accounts OpenAI thinks belong to someone under 18. OpenAI's line is that ads don't shape what ChatGPT answers.
For you, that means a smaller crowd than "everyone who uses ChatGPT." If your customers pay for a higher plan, many of them won't see you. Search Engine Land flagged the same thing.
One more thing about visibility. Search Engine Land reports that OpenAI says running ads doesn't change whether your brand gets mentioned in ChatGPT's answers, and the reverse is true too. So paid and organic are two separate jobs. If you want to see where your site stands in AI answers before you spend a rupee, our free AI visibility audit is a quick place to start.
Format 1: The sponsored text ad (live)

Start with the one you'll most likely buy. The sponsored text ad has six parts: your business name, a small logo, a headline, a short description, a landing page link and an image.
Copy limits are where people trip. Search Engine Land's walkthrough lists 50 characters for the headline, 100 for the description and a square image. OpenAI's sample ad is much tighter, about 16 and 32 characters, and it says not to make your logo the main picture. Limits move, so look at Ads Manager while you build instead of trusting any blog, ours included.
Some articles say there are several versions of this ad. SerpLens spotted a few layouts in August: one with a short heading on top, and one with two ads side by side, from one domain or two. We couldn't find OpenAI calling any of these a separate format, so we count them as layouts of the same ad. That's why one article says four formats and another says six.
Format 2: Product feed ads (live)

Product feed ads skip the hand-written copy. They pull from your product catalog and show the item with its image, price, sale price and star rating. SerpLens says they started rolling out in July 2026. A carousel with several products from one seller has been reported too, and Evido says the system decides when to show it.
You need a feed to run these, so they're really for online stores. If you're an agency or a clinic, you'll use the text ad. These ads also stay labeled and separate from the normal product results in ChatGPT, which people tend to mix up. If you run a store, the case studies on our site include e-commerce clients.
Format 3: Sponsored Agents (reported US test)

Evido reports that OpenAI started testing Sponsored Agents on September 19, 2026. Someone clicks your ad and lands in a separate chat with your company's own agent. That chat is labeled sponsored, and it's kept apart from the ChatGPT answer and from the person's original conversation. You only see what the person types to your agent.
It's a US test with select advertisers. We'd call it reported rather than confirmed, because we couldn't find it on an OpenAI page. One thing we'd do anyway: get your FAQs, specs and delivery terms into one clear place, since a brand agent is only as good as the answers behind it.
Format 4: Visual ads during image generation (announced)

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a visual ad that will run while ChatGPT is generating images. The first test is for Free and Go users. The ad is labeled and sits apart from the image being made. OpenAI says testing starts later this month, in the US, with a first group of advertisers.
So you can't buy it yet. If you sell furniture, fashion or travel, it's a good time to gather decent product and lifestyle photos, because that's what a format like this runs on.
Formats we couldn't confirm
Agency blogs also list sponsored product comparisons, booking experiences, local business listings, interactive video ads and ads inside checkout. We looked for an OpenAI page on any of them and found nothing. OpenAI has said more formats are coming, but saying that isn't the same as naming them. Until OpenAI posts about one, we're calling it speculation.
Views, clicks and conversions are not formats
One thing that trips people up: Views, Clicks and Conversions aren't ad types. They're how you pay. Views bills per impression. Clicks bills per valid click. Conversions optimizes toward something like a sign-up, but if you choose click billing you're still charged for the clicks, not for the sign-ups.
The bid sits at the ad group level. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting at $3 to $5 per click, and it picks ads through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Treat that number as a starting point. The auction decides your real price.
There are no keywords here. You write context hints that describe the conversations where your offer fits. OpenAI is clear that hints aren't exact match and don't promise your ad appears in a specific chat. Negative Phrases exist for brand safety too, but only for some advertisers.
How to start in India
Go to ads.openai.com and make an account. From what we found, OpenAI opened self-serve Ads Manager to Indian businesses at the end of August 2026. Don't assume every feature is on, though. Accounts differ, so check what yours shows.
Keep your business name, tax details, a payment card and a logo handy. Ads go through review before they run. Search Engine Land also reports that OpenAI doesn't want agencies creating accounts for clients: the client makes the account and adds the agency as a user.
Now the budget. The INR guide we read lists a minimum of ₹725 a day. Search Engine Land reported $25 a day in the US. Those two don't match up neatly, so use whatever minimum Ads Manager shows you before you quote a number to anyone. GST is another open item. OpenAI hasn't said how it appears, so look at your first invoice.
How to measure results

Ads Manager shows impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes. Spend runs 7 to 8 hours behind, so a zero doesn't prove you weren't charged.
Put UTM parameters on your landing page links so the traffic shows up in your own analytics. You can also set up conversion measurement inside Ads Manager. Impressions on their own tell you very little.
Early results look mixed. Search Engine Land ran a small test where ChatGPT traffic converted below Google Ads traffic on the same site. One small test isn't a benchmark. Take it as a reason to be careful.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing context hints like Google keywords and expecting exact matches.
- Making your logo the main image. OpenAI advises against it.
- Sending clicks to a landing page that doesn't match the ad.
- Promising a set number of clicks or customers for a budget.
- Copying a format list from one blog without checking OpenAI's pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ad formats does ChatGPT have?
Right now, two formats are live: a sponsored text ad and a product feed ad. Sponsored Agents are in a US test. OpenAI has announced a visual ad for image generation, with US testing planned this month. Comparisons, booking and local listings have no official source, so treat those as unconfirmed.
Where do ChatGPT ads appear, and who sees them?
Under the answer, with a Sponsored label, kept separate from the reply. Free and Go users see them. Plus, Pro and Business plan users don't, and neither do accounts OpenAI identifies as under 18. OpenAI also says ads don't change the answers ChatGPT gives.
Are ChatGPT ads available in India?
For advertisers, yes. From what we found, OpenAI opened self-serve Ads Manager to Indian businesses at the end of August 2026. Accounts can differ, so log in at ads.openai.com and see which features you actually get before you plan a campaign.
How do I run ads on ChatGPT?
Create an account at ads.openai.com and add your business and payment details. Build a campaign with a goal, budget and dates, then an ad group with a bid and context hints. Write your ads and send them for review. Set up UTM parameters or conversion tracking before launch.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
You pay per 1,000 views or per valid click, depending on the goal you pick. OpenAI suggests starting click bids at $3 to $5, but the auction sets the real price. The INR guide we read lists ₹725 a day as the minimum. Check Ads Manager first.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it for a small business?
Maybe, but it's too early to say. We found no official benchmarks, and the early agency tests are small and mixed. Start with a small test, a landing page that matches the ad, and conversion tracking. No budget buys a guaranteed number of clicks or customers.
